Susanna Marie A. TENNER

B Arts Hons, LLB

Welcome to API Legal.

I am the Principal Solicitor.

I was born in Tonga and raised in Western Sydney.

As a member of a large family and parents who were heavily involved with the local Catholic community and the Tongan Catholic community, I developed a passion for working with people and children, particularly those from ethnic communities or minority groups. In time, I came to believe in law as the tool to empower people who find themselves in difficult and vulnerable situations.

I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours at the University of Sydney, and a Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of New South Wales. I then completed my Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the College of Law, St Leonards.

Whilst studying, I worked for various government agencies, including the Administrative Decisions Tribunal, Migration Review Tribunal and for the Police Team of the NSW Ombudsman’s Office, before embarking upon a legal career with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). In 2003, I started in the Court of Criminal Appeals Unit of the ODPP as a Legal Clerk, and then as a Prosecutions Solicitor in 2006 when I was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of NSW.

As a Solicitor with the ODPP, I gained invaluable experience as an advocate in the District Court analysing and prosecuting serious criminal matters. I have appeared in criminal appeals to the District Court, Sentences in the District Court and I have instructed Crown Prosecutors in many serious criminal trials.

When I left the ODPP, I began a career in criminal defence work with an established law firm in Western Sydney. As a defence lawyer, I was admitted onto the High Court Roll and became re-connected with the community appearing for clients from the pacific and other ethnic communities.

In 2009, I registered as API Legal. Since then I continue to represent people in all areas of criminal and traffic law, and I travel to courts all over NSW. I continue to represent people from various socio-economic backgrounds, on a private contractual agreement or on a grant from Legal Aid.

I welcome the cultural diversity in the young people and adults that I represent, having represented many indigenous and non-indigenous Australians, particularly those from Pacific and Maori communities.

I am a passionate advocate, and can promise commitment and integrity in handling your case.
